This reconstruction of one of the rare Caribbean slave narratives is an amplification, interrogation, and modification of its original texts by cross-reference with official documents, contemporary diaryentries and reports, present-day oral sources, and secondary analyses of plantation society. Accessing a variety of primary records, Maureen Warner-Lewis meticulously reconstructs a biography of enslaved Archibald Monteath, an Igbo, who was brought to Jamaica around 1802, became active in the Moravian Church and later purchased his freedom. Through Monteath's biography she explores the sociology of slavery from 1750 to the 1860s. Fieldwork conducted in Africa brings an important dimension to the work, and scholars of Caribbean history, church history, diasporic studies, Atlantic studies and Jamaica will find it of significant interest.

'There is, as you pick it up, nothing to prepare you for its power' OBSERVER

'Quite simply, one of the most beautiful books I have ever read' AMINATTA FORNA

How do we navigate our complex histories for our children? What is our duty to share and what must we leave for them to discover? Writing to his daughter, David Chariandy asks difficult, unsettling, perhaps impossible questions questions made all the more poignant by our current political landscape.

With tender, spare and luminous prose, Chariandy looks both into his heart and mind and out to the world and humanity.

In the tradition of Ta-Nehisi Coates and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, this is a book about race; this is a book about family.

'Rattling. Heartbreaking. Beautiful.' Atul Gawande, bestselling author of Being Mortal

What makes life worth living in the face of death?

At the age of thirty-six, on the verge of completing a decade's training as a neurosurgeon, Paul Kalanithi was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer. One day he was a doctor treating the dying, the next he was a patient struggling to live.

When Breath Becomes Air chronicles Kalanithi's transformation from a medical student asking what makes a virtuous and meaningful life into a neurosurgeon working in the core of human identity - the brain - and finally into a patient and a new father.

Paul Kalanithi died while working on this profoundly moving book, yet his words live on as a guide to us all. When Breath Becomes Air is a life-affirming reflection on facing our mortality and on the relationship between doctor and patient, from a gifted writer who became both.

'A vital book about dying. Awe-inspiring and exquisite. Obligatory reading for the living' Nigella Lawson

THE INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER FROM PABLO ESCOBARS SON

Until now, we believed that everything had been said about the rise and fall of the most infamous drug lord of all time, Pablo Escobar from books to film to the cult series Narcos. But these versions have always been told from the outside, only capturing half the truth, and never from the intimacy of his own home. Now, more than two decades after the full-fledged manhunt finally caught up with Escobar, his son brings us the dramatic truth as never before.

Here we find a man of contradictions generosity and infinite love for his family; yet capable of the most extreme acts of cruelty and violence. In a deeply personal exploration of his father, we see the inner world of a man who was celebrated by some as a benevolent Robin Hood figure and by others, as a dangerous leader of the most ruthless mafia organisation in human history, reaping vengeance and death on anyone that might stand in his way.

When Escobar died, his then teenage son vowed revenge. But Escobar Jr. quickly recognised that meant following in his father's footstepssomething neither of them had ever wanted. With his change of heart, he denounced the Pablo Escobar legacy. This is far from the story of a child seeking redemption, but a shocking look at the consequences of violence and his attempt to come to terms with it.

Description
Bob Marley first became well-known in the UK and USA in 1977, with the release of his ""Exodus"" album. Living and touring as an international star for the next four years, he died at just 36 years of age in 1981. It is chiefly these years that have shaped our perception of him today, both of the man and of his music. What is less well-known is that Marley signed his record deal in 1972, by which time he had 10 years' worth of recordings behind him. The four years' success he enjoyed before he died were the result of 20 years of music-making and a great deal of variety in his sound and influences. ""Hit Me With Music"" is the first ever attempt to look at Marley's story through the full range of his recordings - the rock, 'rebel' and pop periods that have never fitted in with the image of the laid-back reggae legend from the Caribbean. Looking at recordings from 1963 through to posthumous releases in the 1980s, Marley's life unfolds through the story of his changing style and from his band, the Wailers, to his writing partner Lee Perry and singer wife Rita. A complete discography and buyer's guide to Marley's releases rounds out an intimate, intriguing and revealing portrait of a man whose fame to date is based on only a tiny part of his life's work.
